What is my work about?
My work is about crushing, combining, indenting, separating and penetrating. It is about the personality, perversities and physicality of material and bodies. Zooming in to texture, memory and touch and out for scale, identification and context. It moves in-between the personal and formal.
Artist Statement
My sculptures are assemblages of stone, construction materials and day-to-day items. I consider the associative and physical qualities of these materials, like the memory of scraping a knee on concrete or the cold smoothness of a stone. I am interested in how the practical concerns of making a sculpture, balance, gravity, weight and scale, are informed by experience. Like how the tightening of a belt both gauges the size of a waist and keeps pants from falling
In the studio I go from meditative activities like smoothing stone to impulsive acts of construction. The materials are like words forming a sentence. They are moved, altered and repeated. Like words they have been used before. When I read a great sentence I re –understand the words, moved by the statement they have become. My materials become sculpture when they are in conversation, fitting together, and becoming their own thing a new object.
In sculpture objects and space reveal an understanding of how we live not expressed by language but articulated by material. It is this wordless dialogue that drives my work.
